Reigning champions England displayed a superb all-round performance to defeat Pakistan by seven wickets at The Oval on Thursday. This was their final competitive match before defending their T20 World Cup title.
After winning the toss, England restricted Pakistan to a modest 157. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, named player-of-the-match, took 2-27 from his four overs.
England’s chase began explosively, with Phil Salt (45) and captain Jos Buttler (39) sharing a rapid 82-run opening partnership within seven overs. Harry Brook concluded the match with a six off Haris Rauf, Pakistan’s standout bowler with 3-38, leading England to 158-6, with over three overs to spare.
This victory secured a 2-0 series triumph for England, as two other matches were washed out.
Captain Buttler expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparations: “We have worked hard in training and there is a good feeling around the squad,” he told Sky Sports. Buttler, leading England shortly after the birth of his third child, also reflected on the missed opportunities due to the washouts: “It would have been nice to get two more games in to expose a few guys to different situations.”
England’s openers aggressively targeted Naseem Shah with huge sixes, setting the tone before Salt was dismissed by Rauf for a swift 45. This performance, along with contributions from players in the IPL, leaves England well-prepared for their World Cup campaign.
