Israel Denies Involvement in Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s Death

On Monday, May 20, an anonymous Israeli official denied any involvement in the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. Speaking to Reuters, the official stated, “It wasn’t us.” Raisi, along with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials, died in a helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border. Raisi, a 63-year-old hardliner, was seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

    Official Response and Context

The Israeli government has yet to issue an official statement on Raisi’s death. The two countries have been engaged in a proxy war, highlighted by incidents such as Iran launching drones and ballistic missiles at Israel in April in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consulate in Syria.

    Online Conspiracy Theories

Following Raisi’s death, conspiracy theories emerged online, suggesting that Israeli intelligence agency Mossad was behind the crash. Notably, a joke about a Mossad agent named “Eli Copter” being involved was circulated by Hamas on Telegram and mistaken for fact by some media outlets.

    Clarifications

Media personalities such as Ari Hoffman and columnist Hillel Fuld have confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the rumors about Mossad’s involvement are unfounded and are being spread by Israel-haters and misinformed media sources.

Despite the speculation and conspiracy theories, there is no verified evidence linking Israel to the helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials. The Israeli government’s official stance, conveyed through an anonymous source, denies any involvement in the incident.
