Taiwan Reports Chinese Military Activity Near Its Airspace and Waters
Key Highlights:
- Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence detects three PLA aircraft and six naval vessels near its airspace and waters.
- Concerns arise as two aircraft breach Taiwan’s southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).
- Ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China underscored by Beijing’s frequent military maneuvers near the island.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence has reported the detection of three People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft and six vessels belonging to China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) near its airspace and waters. Of particular concern was the entry of two aircraft into Taiwan’s southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).
In response, Taiwan’s Armed Forces promptly monitored the situation and implemented necessary precautions to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and security. This latest incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, with Beijing frequently conducting military maneuvers near the self-governing island.
While the specific details of the aircraft and vessels involved were not disclosed, nor were the actions taken by the ROC Armed Forces, the presence of PLA military assets near Taiwan remains a sensitive issue, raising concerns over potential escalations in the region.
Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, maintains its autonomy despite China’s claims of sovereignty over the island. The Taiwanese government has consistently appealed for international support to ensure stability and peace in the Taiwan Strait amid escalating tensions.
Since September 2020, China has intensified its use of “gray zone tactics,” including increased military activity near Taiwan. These tactics, defined as efforts beyond steady-state deterrence, aim to achieve security objectives without resorting to direct and sizable use of force, according to CSIS.
