The Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department is set to usher in a new era for forest officers with the imminent induction of 32 officers into the Indian Forest Services (IFoS). This development follows the successful recruitment of candidates into the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Services (JKAS) and Jammu and Kashmir Police Services (JKPS), signaling positive news for the UT Government.
Expanding Inclusion Criteria for IFoS
The Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department has taken a pioneering step by widening the scope of induction into the IFoS. This expansion includes officers from the Wildlife and Soil Conservation wings of the Department, a move that has raised some objections from State Forest Services (SFS) officers. Despite these objections, the Forest Department, led by Dheeraj Gupta, has meticulously conducted a months-long exercise to identify eligible officers from the Forest Department and its allied wings. The process is now on the brink of completion.

32 Officers Ready for IFoS Induction
Official sources have revealed that a total of 32 officers, including State Forest Services (SFS) and other eligible candidates, are poised to be inducted into the prestigious Indian Forest Services within the next month. This development follows a rigorous selection process by the Forest Department.
Clearing the Path to IFoS Induction
Following the Forest Department’s selection process, a crucial meeting will be convened with the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) and Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to formally approve the inductions. With 32 vacant positions for UT officers in the IFoS, it is expected that the process will proceed smoothly.
A Decade-Long Wait Ends
The induction of SFS officers into IFoS has been a long-standing issue, with no recruitment occurring for nearly a decade. Past attempts to initiate the process did not reach fruition, leading to frustration among eligible officers. This development will finally alleviate their plight.Strength of IFoS Officers in Jammu and KashmirJammu and Kashmir currently boasts a total of 106 IFoS officers. While 51 officers are already in their roles, there are 50 officers on the official list, including 49 Regular Recruits and one promoted from SFS. Some officers are on Central deputation.
Mixed Feelings Among SFS Officers
Though SFS officers welcome the inductions after such a long hiatus, concerns persist about the inclusion of Wildlife and Soil Conservation Department officials. SFS officers argue that this move could hinder their prospects and set a “wrong precedent” since the newly included officials haven’t completed the mandatory two-year training in Coimbatore or Dehradun.
Forest Department’s Perspective
The Forest Department stands by its decision to expand the induction process, emphasizing that it is a well-considered move. They believe that all eligible officers deserve a chance at induction, regardless of their specific department within the Forest Services.
Addressing Officer Shortages
The induction of 32 officers into IFoS is expected to help address the shortage of officers in Jammu and Kashmir, a critical need for efficient governance in the region.Boost for Local OfficersThis proposed induction aligns with recent efforts to promote local officers in Jammu and Kashmir. With 27 JKPS officers recently making it to the Indian Police Service (IPS) and 24 JKAS officers close to joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), local officers stand to gain significantly from these opportunities.
Recent Success Stories
Recent years have witnessed significant strides in the induction of officers from Jammu and Kashmir into prestigious services. In July 2021, 13 JKPS officers joined the IPS after more than a decade, and in August 2022, 17 JKAS officers were inducted into the IAS, ending a 12-year drought.
