India Plans AI Regulation Post-Election: Balancing Innovation and Control
India is gearing up to legislate AI regulations post-general elections, aiming to address various tech-related issues. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined plans for a comprehensive regulatory framework, emphasizing the need for balance to foster innovation while mitigating risks.
Following the withdrawal of an advisory on AI model deployment, the government aims to introduce visible labels indicating potential fallibility. Vaishnaw stressed the importance of legislative action over self-regulation to ensure robust oversight. The forthcoming regulations aim to safeguard intellectual property and tackle emerging challenges like deepfakes.
Incidents involving deepfakes, including manipulated videos of celebrities, underscore the urgency of regulating AI. Preserving intellectual property rights amidst AI advancements remains a global concern, with authors and publishers advocating for safeguards against unauthorized use.
In India, the Digital News Publishers Association has advocated for copyright protection against AI models. The proposed regulations seek to address these challenges comprehensively, reflecting India’s commitment to fostering innovation while safeguarding public interest and intellectual property rights.
