JK Election Office issues guidelines for printing election material
In anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Jammu and Kashmir Election Office has issued strict guidelines regarding the printing and publication of election-related material across the Union Territory.
The Chief Electoral Officer has notified all registered printers and publishers in Jammu and Kashmir that the printing and publication of election pamphlets, posters, etc., are governed by Section 127-A of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951.
Mandatory Information on Election Material
According to Section 127-A, all election pamphlets and posters must prominently display the names and addresses of the printer and publisher. Additionally, publishers are required to submit a declaration of their identity, signed by them and attested by two known individuals, to the printer. One copy of this declaration must be sent to the Chief Electoral Officer in the capital city or to the District Magistrate in other cases.
The law defines election pamphlets or posters as any printed material distributed to promote or prejudice the election of a candidate or group of candidates. However, routine election meeting announcements or instructions to election workers are exempt from this definition.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Violations of these provisions can result in imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of up to two thousand rupees, or both.
These guidelines aim to ensure transparency and accountability in the election process and uphold the integrity of democratic practices in Jammu and Kashmir.
