MEA in Contact with Gujarat Government Regarding Attack on Foreign Students
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has initiated communication with the Gujarat government following an alleged mob attack on foreign students of Gujarat University while they were offering Namaz in the university hostel.
Incident Details and Government Response
According to reports, a group of unidentified individuals attacked a group of foreign students, throwing stones and vandalizing hostel rooms during the Namaz. Ahmedabad Commissioner of Police, GS Malik, provided insights into the incident, stating that around 20-25 people confronted the students, questioning their choice of location for prayers and instigating a confrontation. Swift police action led to the registration of FIRs against the perpetrators, with one individual identified. Two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
Government’s Seriousness and Investigation
Vice Chancellor Neerja Arun Gupta affirmed the gravity of the situation, highlighting that the FIR has been lodged, and both the police and government are actively addressing the matter. With around 300 students studying at Gujarat University, including 75 foreign students in the dedicated A Block hostel, the clash prompted serious concerns. The authorities are investigating the incident, examining viral videos to understand the sequence of events leading to the confrontation.
The collaboration between the MEA and Gujarat government underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of foreign students, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action against those responsible for the attack.
