Government Notifies Rules for National Dental Commission Act
The government has taken a significant step by notifying the rules for implementing the National Dental Commission Act, aimed at regulating dental education and the profession across India.
National Dental Commission to Regulate Private College Fees
Replacing the Dentists Act of 1948, the new Act introduces the National Dental Commission, tasked with regulating fees for half of the seats in private dental colleges, aligning with global standards.
Autonomous Boards to Enhance Regulation
The Act empowers three autonomous boards: Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Dental Education Board, Dental Assessment and Rating Board, and Ethics and Dental Registration Board, to ensure comprehensive regulation.
The National Dental Commission Bill, passed last year, also mandates the establishment of state dental councils or joint dental councils, decentralizing authority for better regulation.
The commission, composed of a chairperson, eight ex-officio members, and 24 part-time members, will enforce fixed tenures without reappointment options. It aims to promote preventive dental care and enhance professional soft skills.
Appointments to the commission include three part-time members with four-year terms, leveraging over 20 years of expertise, and ten part-time members appointed on a rotational basis every two years.
The legislation emphasizes making dental education affordable by regulating fees in private dental colleges, ensuring inclusivity across socio-economic backgrounds.
Rahul Singh, a senior resident dentist at GIMS, Greater Noida, highlights the bill’s focus on affordability and merit-based selection through standardized admissions tests, enhancing fairness and streamlining administrative processes.
