Government Cracks Down on Obscene Content: 18 Platforms Blocked

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has blocked 18 streaming platforms in India for publishing obscene and vulgar content. This action includes disabling 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media accounts associated with these platforms.

    Minister’s Emphasis on Responsible Content

Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Anurag Singh Thakur, stresses the responsibility of platforms to avoid spreading obscenity and vulgarity under the guise of creative expression.

The recent decision was made in consultation with various ministries and domain experts, citing violations of the IT Act, IPC, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

    Challenges and Government Initiatives

The blocked content depicted nudity, sexual acts, and inappropriate relationships, violating legal statutes. Sensitization efforts with OTT platforms continue, alongside the promotion of the OTT industry through initiatives like the Inaugural OTT Award for Web Series and a light-touch regulatory framework under the IT Rules, 2021.
