Team Wellbeing Through Reflection and Communication: Research
Highlighting the Conflict
Recent research from Greater Helsinki, Finland, illuminates the delicate interplay between team and individual wellbeing in the workplace. Emma Nordbäck, Assistant Professor at Hanken School of Economics, underscores the importance of striking a balance between team and individual needs to prevent burnout and maintain overall team cohesion.
Study Insights: Understanding the Dynamics
Published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior, the study examined 69 individuals across 12 teams during the COVID pandemic. Through qualitative diaries and questionnaires, researchers delved into factors such as individual work engagement, burnout risk, team viability, satisfaction, and interpersonal relationships.
Navigating Today’s Work Landscape
Assistant Professor Niina Nurmi of Aalto University highlights the challenges posed by today’s fast-paced work environment, where disruptions can strain both team and individual dynamics. The study reveals instances where individuals prioritized their own needs at the expense of team wellbeing, while others focused solely on team survival, risking their own wellbeing in the process.
Well-being Through Reflection
The study emphasizes the role of reflection in fostering both individual and team wellbeing. Nordbäck suggests that open communication and adaptive practices are key to addressing the divergent needs within teams. However, such reflective teams remain in the minority, signaling a need for greater awareness and action in fostering collective welfare.
Looking Ahead: Prioritizing Team Dynamics
As workplaces increasingly prioritize individual needs, Nordbäck stresses the critical role of team leaders in promoting communication and informed compromises among team members. By ensuring that both individual and team wellbeing receive due attention, organizations can bolster long-term viability and success.
Research Team and Insights
Alongside Nordbäck and Nurmi, the research team included Jennifer Gibbs, Maggie Boyraz, and Minna Logemann. Their collaborative efforts underscore the importance of prioritizing welfare issues and fostering relationships to navigate complex workplace dynamics.
