Chidambaram Exposes BJP’s Intentions on Constitution Amendment
In response to BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde’s controversial remarks about “rewriting the Indian Constitution,” senior Congress leader P Chidambaram highlighted that the BJP’s intention to amend the Constitution was never a secret. He stated that many BJP leaders privately expressed the desire for India to be a Hindu Rashtra and advocated Hindi as the sole official language. Chidambaram criticized Hegde’s statement as an “old ploy” meant to rally party cadres, emphasizing the potential threats to parliamentary democracy, federalism, minority rights, and linguistic diversity if the Constitution were amended according to the BJP’s agenda.
Kharge Warns Against BJP’s Alleged Devious Agenda
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned Hegde’s statement, asserting that it exposed the Modi-RSS devious agenda to impose dictatorship. Kharge outlined potential consequences, including the imposition of a Manuvaadi mindset, erosion of SCs, STs, and OBCs’ rights, curtailment of institutional independence, suppression of freedom of expression, and the destruction of India’s secular fabric and unity in diversity. He affirmed the Indian National Congress’s commitment to protecting the principles of sovereignty, socialism, secularism, and democracy enshrined in the Constitution.
BJP Distances Itself, Seeks Response from Hegde
The BJP distanced itself from Hegde’s comments, categorizing them as his personal views. The party emphasized that it seeks a response from Hegde, who had earlier stated that a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and power in over 20 states would be necessary to amend the Constitution. The controversy has reignited discussions about the BJP’s stance on constitutional amendments, prompting concerns from opposition leaders about the potential consequences for India’s democratic and diverse fabric.
