Notice Issued to Delhi Police in Sharjeel Imam’s Bail Plea Challenge
The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Delhi Police in response to Sharjeel Imam’s plea challenging a trial court’s decision denying him bail in a sedition case. The division bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain granted two weeks for Delhi Police to file a reply, with the petitioner’s counsel given one week to respond. The High Court listed the matter for a hearing in April.
Background of the Sedition Case and Bail Denial
Sharjeel Imam faces charges related to alleged inflammatory speeches made at Aligarh Muslim University and the Jamia area in 2019. The trial court had dismissed his bail plea on February 17. The Delhi High Court had earlier directed the trial court to decide on the bail application within 10 days.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Raises Concerns
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed concerns about the increasing incidents of Tamil fishermen being apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities. Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene, emphasizing the impact on the livelihoods of the fishing communities.
Statistics Highlighting Escalating Tensions
Chief Minister Stalin shared statistics revealing a surge in incidents, with 243 fishermen and 37 boats apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy in 2023. Within the past 28 days, 88 fishermen and 12 boats were seized in six incidents. The heightened frequency underscores the urgency for a resolution.
The notice from the Delhi High Court sets the stage for further legal proceedings in Sharjeel Imam’s case, with implications for both his sedition charges and the broader issue of Tamil fishermen’s rights.
