Pakistani Journalist Imran Riaz Granted Bail in Zaman Park Attack Case
Pakistan’s anti-terrorism court granted bail to journalist Imran Riaz in the Zaman Park attack case, where he was arrested last year on charges of vandalism and assaulting police officials during a clash at Imran Khan’s Lahore residence. The court ordered Riaz to submit PKR 2 lakh against the bail. M Azhar Siddique, Riaz’s legal heir, welcomed the decision, emphasizing the baselessness of the case and the journalist’s innocence.
In a video message, Siddique expressed relief over Riaz being granted bail, stating that the case was designed against him during the investigation. He highlighted the lack of evidence presented by the prosecution and criticized the government’s multiple attempts to register baseless cases against Riaz. Siddique warned of potential future attempts to arrest Riaz but asserted that all such cases would be baseless.
Background on Imran Riaz’s Arrest
Imran Riaz, a prominent journalist with a popular YouTube channel, was initially freed on bail in a corruption case but re-arrested hours later on terrorism charges. The anti-terrorism court ordered his custody for five days, and he was later transferred to an unknown location outside Lahore. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) previously reported on his arrest, raising concerns about press freedom in Pakistan.
