Canada Resumes UNRWA Funding Amid Gaza Crisis
Amid the Israel-Gaza conflict, Canada has announced the resumption of funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This decision comes after several countries, including Canada, cut aid following allegations by Israel that some UNRWA employees in Gaza participated in a Hamas attack. Canadian Minister Ahmed Hussen stated that the funding aims to address the urgent needs of Palestinian civilians during the crisis.
UNRWA Faces Allegations and International Response
Israel accused UNRWA employees without providing concrete evidence. UNRWA promptly dismissed the accused employees and initiated an internal investigation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed an independent panel to probe the allegations. Canada’s initial decision to cut funding drew criticism, with Sweden now also resuming aid after receiving assurances of enhanced spending and personnel checks.
Humanitarian Concerns in Gaza Persist
UNRWA, vital for humanitarian supplies in Gaza, faced severe consequences due to funding cuts. Humanitarian groups warned of dire repercussions, emphasizing the impact on Palestinians in Gaza. As the situation in the Strip worsens with ongoing Israeli military attacks, humanitarian crises escalate, leading to deaths, hunger, and disease among the civilian population.
