Amnesty Chief Appeals to EU for Immediate UNRWA Funding
Agnes Callamard, the Secretary General of Amnesty International, has penned a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, urging the European Union to swiftly resume funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
In a X Post, Callamard emphasized that suspending funding in the face of concerning signs of genocide could exacerbate and contribute to the harms the Genocide Convention aims to prevent.
While acknowledging the need for independent investigations into allegations against some UNRWA staff, Callamard expressed concerns that halting funding might legitimize the collective punishment of Palestinians.
