HRFP Investigates Accusations: Calls for Protection and Justice
Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) has taken a strong stance, demanding protection and justice for Younas Masih, a 68-year-old man falsely accused of blasphemy in Khurrianwala village, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The HRFP conducted a comprehensive fact-finding mission, visiting the incident sites, police stations, and interviewing those involved.
Younas Masih, who was eventually cleared of all charges, sought ongoing assistance from HRFP, highlighting the urgent need for safety. In a press statement, HRFP revealed that Younas Masih and his family provided details of the consequences and reasons behind the false blasphemy accusations. The HRFP team meticulously gathered facts, evidence, and documents, ultimately concluding that the charges against Younas Masih were baseless.
Roots of the False Accusation: Personal Grudges and Family Dispute
The incident unfolded on February 10 when Younas Masih became the target of false blasphemy accusations by Fatima Bibi and her husband Liaqat Ali. HRFP’s press release indicates that the accusations stemmed from personal grudges and a longstanding family dispute. A prior conflict between Christian and Muslim women in the neighborhood escalated, leading to strained relations between Fatima Bibi and Younas Masih’s wife, Azra Bibi.
Provocation and False Allegations: A Closer Look
Fatima Bibi, acting out of personal animosity, suddenly accused Younas Masih of defiling Quranic pages, prompting a police intervention. The HRFP investigation revealed that the accusation was a result of heightened tensions and the desire for revenge against Younas Masih’s family. He was taken into custody on February 10 and released on February 13 after being proven innocent.
Legal Actions and HRFP’s Stance: Repealing Blasphemy Laws
In the aftermath, HRFP applauded the police’s actions in proving Younas Masih innocent and condemned the imprisonment of Fatima Bibi and Liaqat after being found guilty. HRFP President Naveed Walter emphasized the sensitivity of the matter, acknowledging that even though the charges were dropped, Younas Masih and his family may face ongoing threats from religious fundamentalists. The HRFP’s ultimate demand is the repeal of blasphemy laws and the continuous protection of blasphemy victims and their families, whether incarcerated or not.
