Sitaram Yechury Challenges ED Summons in High Court
Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, has approached the Delhi High Court against the Enforcement Directorate’s summons related to a money laundering case. Yechury, addressing the media in Thiruvananthapuram, expressed confidence in forging common candidates with the INDIA bloc in most states. The plea challenges the constitutional validity of certain provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, citing concerns about the invasion of personal liberty if he appears before the agency.
Allegations Against Amanatullah Khan and ED’s Investigation
The money laundering probe is linked to alleged irregularities in the Delhi Waqf Board recruitment during Amanatullah Khan’s tenure. The ED claims Khan illegally recruited 32 individuals, acquiring substantial proceeds of crime in cash and investing them in immovable assets. Recently, the ED filed a charge sheet against five entities, including associates Zeeshan Haider, Daud Nasir, and Jawed Imam Siddiqui.
Political Landscape and Strategy of CPI(M)
Yechury highlighted the BJP’s strategy, attributing their recent victories to Hindutva communal consolidation and exploitation of caste sentiments. Despite JD(U) breaking ties with the INDIA bloc, the CPI(M) aims to strengthen the opposition coalition. Yechury criticized the Ayodhya Ram Temple inauguration, calling it a “state-sponsored event” that undermines secularism. He accused the BJP of misusing central agencies ahead of the 2024 elections and emphasized the need to confront Hindutva communal consolidation.
Efforts to Forge Alliances and Upcoming Actions
Yechury announced ongoing efforts to forge alliances with like-minded parties for the upcoming elections, with discussions nearing conclusion in most states. The CPI(M) expressed solidarity with the call for a country-wide protest action on February 16, 2024, by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Central Trade Unions. Yechury advocated for re-sequencing electronic voting units in polling booths and tallying at least 50% of VVPAT with recorded data as a measure to address concerns over the functioning of EVMs.
