Controversy Surrounds Renovation of Egypt’s Menkaure Pyramid
Renovation work at Egypt’s Menkaure pyramid in Giza has stirred social media criticism, with experts expressing concerns about the approach taken. Mostafa Waziri, the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, hailed it as the “project of the century,” but criticism surfaced after a video showed workers adding granite blocks to the pyramid’s base.
Renovation Sparks Debate on Heritage Preservation
Originally encased in granite, the Menkaure pyramid lost part of its covering over time. The ongoing renovation aims to restore the pyramid’s original style by reconstructing the granite layer. Despite Waziri calling it “Egypt’s gift to the world,” comments on social media questioned the intervention. Egyptologist Monica Hanna criticized the move, stating that international principles on renovations prohibit such interventions, urging archaeologists to mobilize against the perceived absurdity.
Sarcasm and Concerns Over Heritage Management
Some commentators responded with sarcasm, proposing humorously absurd projects like straightening the Tower of Pisa or wallpapering the pyramids. The debate on heritage preservation in Egypt has been intensified by recent controversies, including the destruction of parts of Cairo’s historic area. Civil society, restricted in political activities, focuses on issues like urban planning and heritage to protect the nation’s historical treasures. The controversy over the Menkaure pyramid renovation adds to the ongoing discussions about the preservation of Egypt’s rich cultural heritage.
