Security Breach at Delhi Airport Raises Alarms

A significant security breach occurred at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on January 27, a day after Republic Day celebrations, as an intruder entered the airfield. The breach prompted immediate concerns, leading authorities to bolster security measures swiftly.

Incident Details and Swift Response

An Air India pilot reported the intrusion around 11.30 pm as the flight landed safely. The pilot informed air traffic controllers (ATC) that a man had crossed in front of the aircraft during taxiing. ATC alerted the Airport Operation Control Centre (AOCC), leading to prompt action by CISF, who apprehended the intruder and handed him over to local police. The accused, identified as a drug addict from Haryana’s Nuh district, has been sent to judicial custody.

Enhanced Vigilance and Internal Investigation

With Delhi Airport on high alert due to Republic Day and VVIP movement, the security lapse prompted heightened vigilance from security and safety agencies. An internal committee has been formed to investigate the breach, treating it as a massive security concern. Authorities, including CISF, airport police, and DIAL, are yet to provide an immediate response regarding the unauthorized entry onto the active airfield.

Measures and Penalties Imposed

Jyotiraditya Scindia’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, in a separate incident, imposed heavy penalties on Mumbai airport (90 lakh) and IndiGo (1.2 cr) this month for violating safety rules. The penalties were levied following an incident where passengers were found seated and eating openly in the airport apron area. The government continues to prioritize safety and security protocols in aviation operations.
