The Kashmir Valley experienced a slight increase in minimum temperatures, with Srinagar registering minus 3.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday, according to officials.

An official from the meteorological department reported that Srinagar witnessed a rise of 1.2°C compared to the previous night’s temperature of minus 4.9°C. Despite the increase, it remained 1.6°C below the normal temperature for this time of the year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.0°C, a slight improvement from the previous night’s minus 5.0°C. The temperature was 0.7°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

In Pahalgam, the temperature dipped to minus 5.5°C, which was an improvement from the previous night’s minus 6.3°C. However, it remained 1.7°C above the normal temperature for this famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, located in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.0°C, compared to minus 1.4°C on the previous night. The temperature was 1.9°C above normal for the area.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.7°C, slightly higher than the previous night’s minus 5.0°C. However, it remained 1.6°C below the normal temperature for the region.

Gulmarg, the renowned skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 4.6°C, indicating a rise from the previous night’s minus 3.6°C. The temperature was 3.1°C above normal for the area.

Jammu experienced a minimum temperature of 5.9°C, compared to 5.0°C on the previous night, remaining 1.2°C below the normal temperature for the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.4°C, Batote 1.9°C, and Bhaderwah minus 0.4°C, according to the official.

The meteorological department predicted light snow at isolated higher reaches on January 25 and light rain and snow over scattered places in Jammu and Kashmir for the subsequent two days.

Dry weather is expected to continue until January 24, with generally cloudy conditions on the evening of the 20th, the official noted. From January 25, light snow at isolated higher reaches is anticipated, and from January 26-28, light rain and snow are expected over scattered places. The possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places is likely from January 29-31, as per indications from different models.

The meteorological department also forecast the redevelopment of moderate to dense fog and a fall in day temperatures over Jammu Division during the next three days.

The Kashmir valley is currently experiencing ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the 40-day harsh period of winter, which will conclude on January 29. However, this does not mark the end of winter, as it is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ from January 30 to February 19 and a 10-day-long period known as ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) from February 20 to March 1.
