Pakistans Captaincy Change Falters: Shaheen Afridi’s Debut Marks Loss to New Zealand
Shaheen Afridi’s debut as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team in T20 Internationals didn’t kick off on a positive note, with Pakistan suffering a 46-run defeat against New Zealand on Friday. Tim Southee’s outstanding performance, securing four wickets and becoming the first player to reach 150 wickets in T20 Internationals, played a crucial role in New Zealand’s victory, setting the tone for the five-match series in Auckland. The tourists were dismissed for 180 in the 18th over, attempting to chase New Zealand’s formidable total of 226-8.
In the aftermath of the loss, a viral video surfaced featuring a senior journalist heavily criticizing the Pakistani team. The journalist pointed out a lack of unity within the team, specifically highlighting the captaincy debutant Shaheen Afridi’s seemingly isolated and tense demeanor on the field. The journalist expressed concern over Afridi’s reluctance to seek advice and suggested that he appeared fearful and alone. The journalist also emphasized the absence of the usual spirit associated with the Pakistan cricket team, hinting at a potential mental problem.
The video implicated PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf for the alleged disarray within the team, claiming that changes introduced by Ashraf have contributed to the current situation in Pakistan cricket.
Southee’s remarkable figures of 4-25 were pivotal in the high-scoring game at Eden Park, propelling him to 151 wickets in T20 Internationals. His exceptional performance overshadowed the run chase by Pakistan, especially after Babar Azam’s dismissal in the 17th over. Despite Azam’s valiant effort, the lack of support from teammates led to Pakistan’s downfall.
New Zealand’s innings, characterized by boundaries, set a record as the highest total conceded by Pakistan in a T20, surpassing the previous mark set by England in 2022. Daryl Mitchell’s explosive 61 off 27 balls and Kane Williamson’s contribution, despite being dropped twice, played a crucial role in New Zealand’s dominant display.
Reflecting on the match, Williamson praised Southee’s consistent performances over a 16-year career and highlighted his leadership qualities, acting as a calm presence among the young fast bowlers.
As Pakistan prepares for the second match in Hamilton, Captain Shaheen Afridi acknowledged the need for improvements, emphasizing the importance of utilizing bowling variations effectively and addressing fielding lapses. Despite the challenging start, the team remains optimistic about bouncing back in the series.
