Asus introduced its latest gaming smartphones, the ROG Phone 8 Pro and ROG Phone 8, at CES 2024. These cutting-edge devices from the Taiwanese brand are equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, providing robust performance. Notably, both phones feature an IP68 rating, ensuring resistance to splash and dust. The ROG Phone 8 series showcases vibrant AMOLED displays with an impressive 165Hz refresh rate, accompanied by 50-megapixel triple cameras on the rear. Asus has incorporated substantial 5,500mAh batteries into both the ROG Phone 8 Pro and ROG Phone 8.
In terms of pricing and availability, the Asus ROG Phone 8 is available at $1,099 (approximately Rs. 91,000) for the 16GB + 256GB model. Meanwhile, the ROG Phone 8 Pro is priced at $1,199 (approximately Rs. 99,000) for the 16GB + 512GB model and $1,499 (approximately Rs. 1,24,000) for the 24GB + 1TB model. The ROG Phone 8 comes in Phantom Black and Rebel Grey color options, while the ROG Phone 8 Pro is offered in a sleek Phantom Black shade. However, details regarding pricing and availability in other markets are yet to be disclosed.
Moving on to specifications, both devices in the dual-SIM (Nano) Asus ROG Phone 8 series run on the Android 14-based ROG UI. They feature a sizable 6.78-inch full-HD+ Samsung AMOLED LTPO display with up to 165Hz refresh rate, HDR10 support, 720Hz touch sampling rate, and 2,500 nits peak brightness. The screens are safeguarded by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and cover 107 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, the ROG Phone 8 family packs either up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS4.0 storage in the Pro model or a maximum of 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB UFS4.0 storage in the standard version.
For photography enthusiasts, the ROG Phone 8 Pro and ROG Phone 8 boast a powerful triple rear camera setup led by a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 1/1.56-inch primary sensor with an f/1.9 lens and a six-axis gimbal stabilizer. The camera array also includes a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view and a 32-megapixel sensor featuring OIS and 3x optical zoom. Selfies are handled by a 12-megapixel RGBW front camera, which is binned down to 8-megapixels with 1.4µm binning.
Connectivity options for the Asus ROG Phone 8 family include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 be/ax/ac/a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS/A-GPS/NavIC, 3.5mm headphone jack, and USB Type-C port. The devices are equipped with various sensors such as an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, e-compass, gyroscope, air trigger, proximity sensor, and an in-display fingerprint sensor for authentication. Additionally, the phones support face recognition.
Noteworthy features of the Asus ROG Phone 8 series include an IP68-certified build, indicating dust and water resistance. The phones house a 5,500mAh battery with Qi 1.3 wireless charging and 65W charging capability, promising to fill the battery from 0 to 100 percent in just 39 minutes. The battery life is estimated to provide up to 17 hours of Instagram scrolling or 3.42 hours of gaming, such as Genshin Impact.
In terms of audio technology, Asus has integrated three microphones on the handsets, incorporating the company’s proprietary Audio Noise Reduction Technology. The phones also feature 5-magnet receivers and 5-magnet speakers powered by Dirac Virtuo technology. Physically, the Asus ROG Phone 8 and Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro measure 163.8×76.8×8.9mm and weigh 225 grams.
Continuing a tradition from their predecessors, the Asus ROG Phone 8 series includes a snap-on cooling fan called the AeroActive Cooler X. This accessory utilizes an inbuilt thermoelectric cooling chip and a dedicated fan, effectively reducing temperatures on the back cover by up to 28°C. It also incorporates additional buttons for enhanced game control.
