Chenab Rail Bridge Nears Completion: World’s Tallest at 359m, Connecting Jk
The nearing completion of the Chenab Rail Bridge marks a significant milestone as it is poised to become the world’s tallest railway bridge, standing at an impressive height of 359 meters. Situated between the Bakkal and Kauri villages in the Reasi District of Jammu and Kashmir, this monumental bridge spans the Chenab River, playing a crucial role in connecting the region.
Having been in the planning stages since its approval in 2003, the bridge encountered delays related to stability concerns, leading to a two-decade-long wait. Nevertheless, the construction contract was eventually awarded in 2008. Anticipated to commence operations in 2024, the ‘world’s highest rail bridge’ boasts a remarkable length of 1.3 km.
February 2023 marked a pivotal moment as track laying commenced, signaling the Chenab Rail Bridge’s transition into its operational phase. As an integral component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project, a monumental Rs 35,000 crore initiative, the bridge aims to bolster connectivity in the Jammu and Kashmir region.
Engineered to withstand winds with speeds of up to 260 kmph and designed to endure for 120 years, the Chenab Rail Bridge stands as a remarkable achievement in Indian civil engineering. The locals are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on the economy and express gratitude to the government for spearheading this transformative project.
In breaking height records, the Chenab Rail Bridge symbolizes resilience and dedication, serving as a testament to progress and engineering excellence in the realm of Indian infrastructure.
