Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Harivansh, extended gratitude to Uganda for hosting the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) and invited delegates from various nations to participate in India’s hosting of the 28th conference in 2026. India has previously hosted the CSPOC conference in 1971, 1985, and 2010, setting the stage for another edition in 2026.

Harivansh actively engaged in several deliberations during the 27th CSPOC in Kampala, Uganda, conducted over January 4 and 5, 2024. The discussions encompassed significant topics such as ‘Environment, Climate Change and Role of Parliament’, ‘Diverse and Inclusive Parliaments’, and ‘Health and Well-being Support in Parliaments’.

In the discussions pertaining to Environment and Climate Change, Harivansh highlighted the government’s initiatives and Parliament’s proactive involvement in framing laws and institutions to address climate change impacts. He emphasized the increased parliamentary attention towards climate-related issues, indicating a surge in related inquiries over the past two decades.

Addressing the importance of diverse and inclusive Parliaments, Harivansh stressed the necessity for parliamentary representation reflecting societal diversity, particularly catering to the needs of youth and women. He spotlighted the significant passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill, guaranteeing one-third reservation of parliamentary seats for women, as a testament to Parliament’s inclusivity. Additionally, he underscored the role of Parliamentary Committees and gender-sensitive policy initiatives like gender budgeting to promote more inclusive policies.
