On January 4, Vodafone Idea Limited made an official announcement regarding its intention to pursue legal action for the rectification and reversal of an order it received under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017. The order imposed a penalty of ₹10.76 crore on the telecommunications company. In a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Vodafone Idea revealed that the alleged violation pertained to the incorrect transition of CENVAT credit into the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.
Expressing disagreement with the order, Vodafone Idea stated that it would take appropriate actions to rectify or reverse the decision. According to the company, it received the order on January 3, and it involved a penalty amounting to ₹10,76,56,733.
In recent data released by the Telecom Authority of India, Vodafone Idea witnessed a substantial loss of 20.44 lakh wireless users in October. This decline in subscribers brought VIL’s wireless user base down to 22.54 crore. Adding to its challenges, Vodafone Idea disclosed on January 3 that its Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer, P Balaji, has resigned. Balaji will cease to be a senior management personnel of the company effective from January 10, 2024. In his resignation letter, shared as part of the filing, Balaji expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Vodafone Idea for over 9 years and acknowledged the collective efforts to transform the company. He mentioned his eagerness to pursue personal and professional goals outside of VIL and requested an immediate release from his responsibilities, urging the company to waive the contractual notice period obligation.
