Update on Qatar Court’s Decision Regarding Indian Ex-Navy Personnel
Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), addressed queries during a weekly media briefing regarding the recent reduction in the sentences of eight Indian ex-Navy personnel by the Court of Appeal in Qatar. Bagchi emphasized that the government’s priority remains safeguarding the interests of the Indian nationals and their families in this matter.
He mentioned that while the sentences have been reduced, further details about the court’s decision are awaited. The MEA will refrain from speculation until the detailed judgment is reviewed. Bagchi stated that discussions on the next course of action will be held with the legal team and the family members of the former Navy personnel.
The Court of Appeal in Qatar, on Thursday, commuted the death sentences of the eight ex-Indian naval officers, who had been arrested in the Dahra Global case last year. Their sentences have been amended to jail terms.
The MEA previously released a statement affirming their commitment to engage with Qatari authorities on this matter. They have maintained close communication with the legal team and the family members of the individuals involved. Indian officials, including the Ambassador to Qatar, were present during the Court of Appeal’s proceedings.
Bagchi highlighted the existence of an agreement between India and Qatar for the transfer of sentenced individuals. However, he mentioned the need for confirmation regarding its current status, as it necessitates ratification by both nations. Bagchi stated that the MEA will verify whether this agreement is currently in force between India and Qatar.
The situation remains sensitive and confidential, hence the MEA refrained from making further comments at this stage.
The Indian government continues to stand by the imprisoned nationals and their families, providing ongoing consular and legal assistance, while seeking further clarity and pursuing appropriate diplomatic channels in this case.
