Fog Blankets Kashmir Amid Severe Cold Wave; Meteorological Predictions Ahead

A dense fog shrouded most of Kashmir, including Srinagar, amidst severe cold wave conditions, reported officials on Thursday.

According to meteorological department sources, Srinagar witnessed a low temperature of minus 3.3°C, slightly lower than the previous night’s minus 2.6°C and 1.2°C below the seasonal average.

The fog caused reduced visibility and slowed down traffic across various parts of the Valley, affecting daily life. Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kokernag, Kupwara, and Gulmarg reported varying temperatures, with certain areas witnessing temperatures below normal averages for this time of year.

Gulmarg, renowned for its skiing, experienced a relatively warmer temperature, recording a low of minus 2.6°C, notably 3.6°C above its normal temperature for this period. In contrast, other regions, such as Jammu, noted a dip in temperature below normal levels.

As the Kashmir valley continues to endure the ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day period known for its harsh winter conditions lasting until January 30, the meteorological department foresees cloudy weather with the likelihood of light snowfall in isolated higher areas within the next 24 hours.

Moreover, they predict generally dry weather but with moderate to dense fog across specific districts until December 31.

Anticipating a change in weather, the forecast suggests the possibility of light snow in higher reaches on the evening/night of December 31.

The following days are expected to remain dry until January 2, with cloudy weather and predictions of light rain/snow at isolated places on January 3-4.

Residents are advised to remain cautious amid the foggy conditions and fluctuations in temperatures, preparing for potential snowfall as outlined in the meteorological department’s forecast for the upcoming days.
