Government Warns Platforms Against Fraudulent-Loan-Ads: Minister Chandrasekhar Takes Stand on Deceptive Practices
The government has instructed social media and online platforms to refrain from hosting advertisements of deceptive loan applications, as stated by Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Wednesday. Mr. Chandrasekhar emphasized that the Ministry of Information Technology (IT) has explicitly communicated to these platforms that they must not display advertisements for fraudulent loan applications, as such practices are deceptive and take advantage of individuals using the internet.
Addressing the issue, the Minister of State for Electronics and IT mentioned that the government is currently focusing on cracking down on the advertising of fraudulent loan applications, which several platforms have been promoting. He highlighted that the advisory issued the day before makes it unequivocal that no intermediary should carry advertisements for deceptive loan applications. This is essential to prevent misleading practices and protect individuals who utilize the internet.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Mr. Chandrasekhar noted that there is an ongoing evolution in jurisprudence and the government’s approach toward ensuring a safe and trusted internet environment. He pointed out that the existing IT rules clearly identify 11 categories of prohibited content, indicating the government’s commitment to regulating and maintaining a secure online space.
