Opposition Clashes with Police in Serbia Amid Election Fraud Claims
Riot police clashed with opposition supporters in Serbia as protests erupted demanding the annulment of allegedly fraudulent elections held on December 17.
Reports from Al Jazeera indicated that hundreds of demonstrators sought to storm Belgrade City Hall on Sunday evening, contesting the parliamentary and local election results that were marred by accusations of widespread fraud, vote buying, and undue influence by President Aleksandar Vucic.
Chants of “Vucic thief” and “Vucic is Putin” echoed as protesters wielding flagpoles and rocks attempted to breach the capital’s administration building.
However, they were met with resistance from riot police, deploying tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
Preliminary results released by electoral authorities indicated that Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) secured a parliamentary majority with nearly 47 percent of the votes.
The opposition group Serbia Against Violence and the Socialist Party of Serbia followed with 23.56 percent and 6.56 percent of the votes, respectively, as reported by Al Jazeera based on electoral authority statements.
Earlier antigovernment protests in May, triggered by consecutive fatal shootings claiming the lives of 18 individuals, including nine children, had initially targeted these incidents before expanding into a broader movement voicing discontent over issues such as escalating inflation and perceived governmental corruption.
