Dr NK Arora, head of INSACOG, clarified that no additional vaccine dose is required against the JN.1 subvariant despite the surge in COVID-19 cases across India. Speaking to ANI, he emphasized preventive measures for those aged 60 and older or with comorbidities and immunosuppressive medication usage. However, he asserted that for others, there’s no necessity for extra doses.

Dr Arora noted the emergence of various Omicron subvariants but assured that none have exhibited increased severity. Detailing the symptoms of JN.1, he highlighted resemblances to other Omicron subvariants, including fever, nasal discharge, cough, occasional diarrhea, and body aches, with most patients recovering in a few days.

Despite rising cases, Dr Arora highlighted a lower hospitalization rate. He reassured that although cases have increased, hospital admissions, severe disease requiring ventilation, or resulting deaths haven’t risen significantly.

Emphasizing vigilance over panic, Dr Arora urged caution but assured there’s no need for alarm. India recorded a notable spike in COVID cases, predominantly in Kerala, reporting 423 new cases, with two deaths in the state.

The World Health Organization (WHO) labeled JN.1 as a distinct variant of interest, separate from its parent lineage BA.2.86. However, based on current evidence, the WHO asserted a low overall risk from JN.1. It further mentioned that while JN.1 might increase respiratory infections in countries with the onset of Northern Hemisphere winter, its global public health risk remains low.

The WHO advised precautionary measures, such as mask-wearing, maintaining safe distances, practicing respiratory etiquette, hand hygiene, and getting tested for symptoms or potential exposure to COVID-19 or influenza.
