Parliamentary Chaos: 45 Rajya Sabha Members Suspended for Winter Session Misconduct
In a series of intense developments within Parliament, 45 members from the opposition, including significant figures such as Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, and KC Venugopal from Congress, were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the ongoing winter session, set to conclude on December 22.
Out of the 45 members suspended, 34 were barred for the remaining part of the session, while the misconduct of the other 11 was referred to the Privileges Committee. This committee has been given three months to submit its report, and the suspended members will remain barred until the panel concludes its investigation.
The motion for suspension was set in motion by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi. Despite repeated warnings against displaying placards in the House, violations continued, prompting the motion for suspension. BJP MP Rajendra Agrawal, presiding over the House, highlighted the members’ persistent breach of rules, leading to the adoption of the motion for suspension.
The suspension in the Rajya Sabha follows a prior move where 33 opposition MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the winter session for similar reasons – “misconduct” and non-compliance with the Chair’s directives.
The chaos unfolded amidst the opposition’s demand for Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the December 13th breach of Parliament’s security. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the Prime Minister and Home Minister for addressing the issue outside Parliament during the ongoing session. He highlighted the opposition’s rightful demand for Shah’s statement within the Houses, which he regarded as a basic and legitimate request in the current circumstances.
The situation has led to repeated adjournments of Parliament sessions, escalating tensions between the government and opposition, marking an intense and contentious phase in the ongoing winter session.
