Early Trends in Rajasthan Assembly Election Count shows Congress Leading
As the counting of votes for the Rajasthan assembly elections progresses, early trends suggest a lead for Congress in four seats, while BJP is leading in one. Notably, Congress MLA candidate Amin Kagzi from the Kishan Pole constituency is among those leading, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Prayers and Anticipation on Counting Day
Union Minister and BJP leader Gajendra Singh Shekhawat offered prayers at Jaipur’s Govind Dev Ji temple on the day of the vote count, reflecting the high stakes and anticipation surrounding the election results. These elections are particularly significant as Rajasthan has a history of not re-electing incumbent governments for nearly three decades.
Exit Polls Indicate a Close Contest
Exit polls have highlighted a tough battle in Rajasthan, with predictions varying between BJP and Congress regarding who will form the next government. A survey indicated varied support for both parties among different communities, including Jats, SCs, STs, Muslims, Brahmins, Rajputs, and OBCs.
Key Candidates and Political Dynamics
The election sees prominent leaders like Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot in key roles. Gehlot, representing Sardarpura since 1998, and Raje, contesting from Jhalrapatan, are key figures whose political futures hinge on these election results. The Gehlot-led Congress government has been in power since 2018, while Raje, a two-term Chief Minister, faces a significant contest in Jhalrapatan.
Election Context and Voter Turnout
The election, held on 199 of 200 assembly seats, saw a voter turnout of 74.62% through EVMs and around 0.8% through home-voting and postal ballots. The 2018 election results had Congress winning 99 seats, with Gehlot assuming the Chief Minister position with the support of BSP MLAs and independents. These elections are crucial for both BJP and Congress, setting the stage for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
