Tripura’s Battle Against Rising HIV/AIDS Cases, with Special Focus on Student Population
Tripura’s Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed grave concerns over the growing HIV/AIDS cases in the state, especially among students, during a recent public event. The state’s efforts to combat this health crisis were highlighted, emphasizing awareness and prevention strategies.
Alarming Statistics and Targeted Response
Tripura has reported a total of 5,269 HIV/AIDS cases, including a worrying number of 575 students. The demographic breakdown shows 1,022 women, 4,246 men, and 1 individual identifying as third gender affected by this disease. In response, the state government has initiated various measures focusing on AIDS awareness, counseling, and testing.
Extensive Medical Support Infrastructure
To tackle the situation, Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers have been established in 24 state hospitals. Additionally, 133 hospitals are equipped with Facility Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers, and 3 PPP Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers are operational. A mobile integrated counseling and testing van is also active to facilitate these services.
Focus on Prevention of Parent-to-Child Transmission
A significant step has been the establishment of a Prevention of Parent-to-Child Transmission Center (PPTCT) at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital. This initiative aims to curb the mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, a critical aspect of controlling the disease’s spread.
Role of Youth and Public Awareness Campaigns
Acknowledging the vital role of youth in combating HIV/AIDS, the Tripura CM emphasized the importance of public awareness. He advocated for regular campaigns, especially in light of the global observation of World AIDS Day on December 1. The theme for this year, ‘Let Communities Lead,’ highlights the crucial role of communities in AIDS awareness and prevention.
World AIDS Day Observance and High-Profile Participation
In observance of World AIDS Day, a mass rally was organized by the Tripura State AIDS Control Society at Umakanta Academy Ground, Agartala. The event aimed to spread awareness about AIDS and its impact on the immune system. Dignitaries including Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, Health Department Secretary Sandip R Rathor, and Padma Shri awardee gymnast Dipa Karmakar, the Brand Ambassador of Tripura State AIDS Control Society, participated in the rally.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that such initiatives would significantly raise awareness about AIDS among the people of Tripura, contributing to a better-informed and healthier state.
