Australia Dismisses Prominent Officer Following WhatsApp Message Leak
Michael Pezzullo, the head of Australia’s Department of Home Affairs, has been terminated from his position. This decision comes after a two-month independent investigation revealed multiple breaches of the public service code of conduct. Pezzullo’s alleged actions included failing to maintain political impartiality, misusing his authority for personal gain, and engaging in inappropriate communications about ministers and colleagues.
Probe Triggered by WhatsApp Exposé
The investigation was initiated following media revelations about Pezzullo’s encrypted WhatsApp messages, which reportedly aimed to manipulate conservative governments’ decisions. Notable among these were messages in which he appeared to advocate for a “right winger” to oversee immigration, citing concerns about people smugglers.
Mixed Reactions to Pezzullo’s Removal
Ian Rintoul, a spokesperson for Australia’s Refugee Action Coalition, expressed no sympathy for Pezzullo’s dismissal. Describing Pezzullo as a “departmental attack dog,” Rintoul indicated that the official played a key role in implementing Australia’s stringent immigration policies under successive governments. However, he expressed skepticism that Pezzullo’s departure would significantly alter the Labor government’s tough stance on immigration.
Government’s Continued Hardline Immigration Policy
Despite Pezzullo’s removal, the Labor government’s rigorous approach to immigration seems unchanged. Recently, it enacted legislation allowing for home curfews and ankle bracelets for many migrants with criminal records, in response to a High Court decision necessitating their release from detention.
