Nipah Virus Update: Contact List Grows, Containment Measures Implemented in Kozhikode (Representative Image)
In Kerala, the contact list of individuals linked to Nipah-infected patients in Kozhikode continues to expand, with 1080 persons identified so far. Among them, 297 are categorized as high-risk individuals, and an additional 29 individuals are from neighboring districts. Health authorities have taken stringent measures to control the spread of the virus.
Isolation and Testing
All individuals on the contact list have been placed in isolation, and their bodily fluids have been sent for testing to determine if they have been infected with the Nipah virus. Health workers have been conducting extensive field surveys, covering over 15,000 households in the district as part of their efforts to track and trace potential cases.
Containment Zone Declared
Following the confirmation of a Nipah virus case in a Cheruvannoor resident, the Kozhikode District Collector has declared a five-kilometer area around the patient’s residence as a containment zone. This declaration has prompted authorities to implement strict perimeter controls in seven municipal wards of the Kozhikode Corporation and the entire Feroke Municipality. Barricades have been set up to restrict access to these areas.
Medical Board Formation and Reporting
State Health Minister Veena George held a high-level meeting to address the situation and directed private hospitals treating Nipah patients to establish medical boards. These medical boards are tasked with submitting daily reports to the government to ensure effective monitoring and response.
Online Classes and Educational Institutions
As a precautionary measure, district authorities have instructed all educational institutions to conduct classes online until the 24th of this month. This move aims to reduce the risk of the virus spreading within school communities.
Kerala health authorities are taking proactive steps to contain the Nipah virus outbreak and protect public health. Vigilance, contact tracing, and strict containment measures are crucial in managing the situation and preventing further transmission of the virus.
