    Transforming Transportation in Chhattisgarh

In a significant development for Chhattisgarh’s infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s (SECL) East Rail Corridor Phase-1 in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. This milestone project, completed at a cost of approximately ₹3,055 crore, is poised to revolutionize the transportation of coal and raw materials, benefiting numerous end-use projects, including power generation.

    A Boon for Coal Transport

The newly inaugurated 124 km-long rail line connecting Kharsia and Dharamjaygarh is set to play a pivotal role in the efficient transportation of coal from SECL mines and other coalfields in the Mand-Raigad Coalfield area within Raigarh district. The annual capacity of the project, boasting an impressive 62 million tonnes, promises to meet the energy demands of the nation while facilitating economic growth.

    Fostering Environmental Conservation

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of balancing energy needs and environmental preservation during his address. He applauded SECL’s efforts in converting a closed coal mine in Surajpur district into an Eco-Tourism site, with similar initiatives planned for Korba. Additionally, the release of mine water is being harnessed to provide irrigation and drinking water to thousands of people, directly benefiting the tribal communities in the area.

    Empowering the Tribal Community

Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Renuka Singh Saruta, highlighted the Ministry of Coal and Tribal Affairs’ commitment to public welfare. She discussed the exploration of alternative uses of coal through processes like coal gasification, and the encouragement of education, healthcare, rural development, and employment opportunities in coal production areas under CSR initiatives.

Prime Minister Modi’s presence at the inauguration was lauded by Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, T.S. Singh Deo, who expressed his gratitude for the impetus the Prime Minister’s visit provides to the state’s development. He emphasized the ongoing collaboration between the state and the center in various sectors, including education and healthcare.

The Chhattisgarh East Rail Corridor Phase-1 project was executed by Chhattisgarh East Railway Limited (CERL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) jointly formed by SECL, IRCON, and CSIDCL, with respective stakes of 64 percent, 26 percent, and 10 percent. Prior to the inauguration, SECL CMD Dr. Prem Sagar Mishra presented an overview of the Chhattisgarh East Rail Corridor to the Prime Minister.

Before taking the stage for the main inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi visited an exhibition showcasing various projects launched and foundation stones laid on this momentous occasion. This exhibition provided detailed insights into the initiatives aimed at propelling Chhattisgarh’s development and growth.
