Lenovo Faces 16% Revenue Decline in Q3 Amidst PC Supply-Demand Imbalance
China’s Lenovo Group Ltd (0992.HK) reported a 16% decline in revenue for the three months ending September, in line with market expectations. The drop, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of sales decline for the world’s largest PC maker, is attributed to an ongoing imbalance in the supply and demand for personal computers (PCs). The company’s quarterly revenue fell to $14.41 billion from the same period last year, reflecting the continued impact of excess inventory accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amid the decline, Lenovo’s performance aligns with analyst estimates compiled by LSEG, averaging $14.45 billion. In May, Lenovo experienced a 14% decline in revenue for the year through March, marking its first annual fall since 2019. The initial surge in electronics sales during the pandemic-induced remote work trend began to recede as supply outpaced demand, leading to a contraction in revenue.
Global PC Shipments Down 7% in Q2 2023, Impacting Lenovo’s Performance
Data from researcher Canalys revealed a 7% decline in worldwide PC shipments during the second quarter of 2023, further impacting Lenovo’s revenue. While the quarterly shipment decline exceeded 30% late last year, recent quarters have seen a slowing pace. Lenovo is strategically responding to these challenges by diversifying its business portfolio beyond PCs, focusing on areas such as smartphones, servers, and information technology (IT) services to enhance profit margins.
Lenovo’s Q2 Net Income Falls 60%, Shares Drop 3.58%
Despite efforts to navigate the evolving market dynamics, Lenovo reported a 60% decrease in overall net income attributable to shareholders in the second fiscal quarter, amounting to $249 million. This figure fell short of analysts’ estimates of $235 million. Following the earnings release, Lenovo shares experienced a 3.58% decline, outpacing the 1.65% drop in the benchmark index.
