Rescue Efforts Underway for Workers Trapped in Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse
In a distressing incident in Uttarakhand, several workers are feared trapped following the collapse of a part of an under-construction tunnel. The tunnel, a segment of the Char Dham Road Project aimed at reducing the journey from Uttarkashi to Yamunotri Dham by 26 kilometers, collapsed early this morning.
Collapse at the Silkyara-Dandalgaon Tunnel
The incident occurred around 4 am at the tunnel connecting Silkyara to Dandalgaon in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district. A 150-meter-long portion of the four-and-a-half-kilometer-long tunnel gave way, raising concerns about the safety of the workers inside.
Immediate Response and Rescue Operations
Upon receiving information about the collapse, the district administration quickly sounded an alert. Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police, Arpan Yaduvanshi, promptly arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue efforts. The State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) along with the police are actively involved in the rescue operations.
Status of the Trapped Workers
It is feared that about 40 workers might be trapped inside the tunnel. In order to reach them, authorities indicated that nearly 200 meters of the slab needs to be cleared. A narrow opening has been created to insert an oxygen pipe into the tunnel to assist the trapped laborers. As of the latest reports, there have been no casualties reported.
Continued Efforts for Rescue and Safety
The focus remains on the ongoing rescue efforts to safely extract the trapped workers. The incident has also brought to light the importance of ensuring stringent safety measures in such large-scale construction projects, particularly in challenging terrains like Uttarakhand.
