The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs is scheduled to convene in the national capital to consider and adopt draft reports on ‘The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023’, ‘The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023’, and ‘The Bharatiya Sakshya Bill 2023.’ This meeting is set to take place on November 6, 2023, in Committee Room “2”, PHA-Extension, New Delhi.

Key Bills to Replace Existing Laws

The proposed bills aim to replace key legal frameworks in India, including the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act 1872. They are part of a broader effort to modernize and enhance the legal system in India.

    Objective of the New Laws

Home Minister Amit Shah introduced these bills with the objective of ensuring that the rights granted by the Constitution to Indian citizens are protected. He emphasized that these new laws are focused on providing justice rather than punishment, with the ultimate goal of preventing crime.

    Changes in the Bills

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, which replaces the CrPC, is set to have 533 sections, with significant changes and additions to existing sections. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, replacing the IPC, will consist of 356 sections, featuring amendments, additions, and repeals of various sections. The Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, replacing the Evidence Act, will include 170 sections, with modifications to existing sections and the addition of a new section.

The upcoming parliamentary meeting is crucial in the legislative process to consider and adopt these draft reports.
