PM Modi Announces 5-Year Extension of Free Ration Scheme
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), a scheme initiated by the Union government in 2020. The scheme, which provides 5 kg of free foodgrains every month to 80 crore Indians, was initially introduced as a pandemic relief measure. Mr. Modi made this significant announcement during a poll rally in Durg district, Chhattisgarh.
PMGKAY: A Lifeline for the Vulnerable
The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) came into existence as a crucial lifeline for millions of vulnerable citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. It supplemented the 5 kg of subsidized foodgrains provided to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act with an additional 5 kg of free foodgrains per month. As the scheme was initially slated to end in December 2022, the Union Cabinet decided to provide NFSA rations for free for one more year. However, with the recent announcement, the extension of PMGKAY will ensure that 80 crore underprivileged citizens continue to receive free ration for the next five years.
In his address to the public, the Prime Minister expressed his commitment to empowering the marginalized population of the country. He highlighted that his government had successfully lifted 13.5 crore people out of poverty and vowed to continue this transformative journey. The extension of PMGKAY is a significant step in ensuring that food security remains a priority for India, offering a lifeline to millions in need.
