NEW DELHI, October 28, 2026 (VoM News): Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam is set to assume charge as the country’s High Commissioner to India on November 16, taking up a key diplomatic assignment at a time when New Delhi and Dhaka are working to address several important bilateral issues.

India approved Siam’s appointment in September, according to an NDTV report. He will succeed Riaz Hamidullah, who has moved to Geneva as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador to Switzerland.

Siam’s appointment comes as the two countries navigate discussions on trade, regional cooperation and the future of their bilateral relationship.

One of his key responsibilities will be to prepare for a proposed visit to India by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Since taking office, Rahman has travelled to Malaysia and China, attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York and is currently visiting Japan.

Another major issue on the diplomatic agenda is the renewal of the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty, signed on December 12, 1996. The 30-year agreement, which governs the sharing of river water during the dry season, is due to expire in December 2026. Bangladesh’s plans for a Padma Barrage have added to the importance of the negotiations.

Despite differences over former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s presence in India, backchannel discussions have continued.

Trade ties have also shown signs of progress, with India supplying modern railway coaches to Bangladesh and Larsen & Toubro securing major contracts for Dhaka Metro Line 1.

Siam’s arrival in New Delhi is expected to coincide with efforts to maintain diplomatic engagement and advance cooperation on outstanding issues.
