Spain Train Collision Near Madrid Leaves 68 Dead, Rail Services Suspended

MADRID, October 28, 2026 (VoM News): At least 68 people have been killed and several others injured after two trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province near Madrid on Wednesday, prompting the suspension of high-speed rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia.

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator ADIF said the collision occurred at around 9 am local time on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line. The operator confirmed that services had been suspended following the incident.

According to reports, a southbound state-owned Renfe AVE high-speed train struck a stationary Iryo train from behind. The impact reportedly caused several carriages to derail and tumble down an embankment.

Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, said 397 passengers were aboard the Renfe train and 147 on the Iryo service.

ABC News reported that human error may have contributed to the collision, alleging that a utility worker repairing a signalling fault failed to warn the AVE train about the other train. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain subject to investigation.

Iryo said it had activated its security protocols and was cooperating closely with the authorities.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked by the accident and was in constant contact with the transport minister and regional officials. Emergency services were working at the scene to assist victims and coordinate rescue operations.

The crash follows a deadly railway accident in Adamuz in January that killed 45 people, renewing concerns about safety on Spain’s high-speed rail network.
