Supreme Court to Hear Petitions on Delhi CJP Protest Detentions, Metro Restrictions on Sunday
NEW DELHI, October 10, 2026, [VoM News]: A special hearing on Sunday, October 11, will be held by supreme court based on petitions challenging the police detentions and public transport restrictions imposed during protests organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and student organisations in Delhi.
The matter would be heard by a special bench comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana.
The matter is scheduled to examine the petitions, including allegations that authorities violated the court’s October 9 directions concerning Metro and railway services.
Advocate Shailendra Mani Tripathi has sought contempt proceedings against senior government, police and Delhi Metro officials, alleging that transport services were restricted despite the court’s direction against a complete shutdown.
The earlier order required authorities to ensure that Metro and train services connecting Delhi were not entirely suspended because of the demonstrations.
Separately, Trinamool Congress MP and senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy has filed a habeas corpus petition challenging the detention of opposition leaders, lawyers and journalists.
The petition seeks the production and release of several political leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress representatives, arguing that their detention violated constitutional protections of personal liberty and peaceful protest.
The protests were organised against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities.
The Supreme Court is expected to examine the legality of the challenged detentions, restrictions on movement and alleged non-compliance with its earlier directions.
