Yemen Launches Dawn of Yemen Operation Aimed at Retaking Capital Sanaa From Houthis

Yemen Launches Dawn of Yemen Operation Aimed at Retaking Capital Sanaa From Houthis

ADEN, October 5, 2026 [VoM News]: The internationally recognized government of Yemen has launched an offensive called “Dawn of Yemen” to retake the capital Sanaa and restore government institutions in areas under Houthi control.

Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi stated that the offensive is an effort towards restoring state institutions and freeing the capital city of Sanaa from Houthi control.

According to al-Alimi, Yemen will be moving towards what he called a new era of freedom, peace and security due to its military strength and backing from other countries in the region.

Al-Alimi’s statement on Sunday came as the government launched an expanded offensive against territories held by the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah.

Sanaa was captured by the Houthis in 2014, after which they established governing institutions there. The group controls much of northern Yemen and also holds strategic locations along the Red Sea coastline.

The government has also claimed progress around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

According to the government, its forces have taken control of the Bab al-Mandeb area and regained access to a nearby airport located within the Dhubab district of Taiz province as part of their military operation against the Houthis.

Current territorial and battlefield claims have not been independently confirmed by other sources.

The developments mark an escalation in Yemen’s ongoing war following several periods without significant progress towards resolving the conflict through negotiations or peace talks.
