India Sends 3 Tonnes of Anti-Tuberculosis Medicines to Sri Lanka Aboard IAF Aircraft

NEW DELHI, September 28, 2026 [VoM News]: India on Monday handed over nearly three tonnes of anti-tuberculosis medication to Sri Lanka, continuing its show of solidarity with the island country’s health services and further deepening the bilateral partnership between India and Sri Lanka.

The medicines were flown to Colombo on an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said.

“We remain committed to support the public health system of Sri Lanka. Approximately 3 tonnes of anti-tuberculosis medicines was today sent to Colombo on an IAF C130J,” Jaishankar said in a post on X. 18 Oct 23, 00:10 PM (IST) Is there a typo?

0 Comments Kolkata, Oct 18 (PTI) India has supplied seven metric tonnes of medicines for Sri Lankan troops who aided Tamil civilians in the island nation to the health authorities in Colombo, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday. Eight trucks carrying the medicine arrived in the northern city of Jaffna. In this connection, India provided 3000kg of anti-tuberculosis (TB) medicines to the Health Authorities of Sri Lanka by a flight from Jaffna to Colombo on 18 October 2023. The anti-tuberculosis medicines, which are an essential constituent of India’s contribution in the area of Tuberculosis Control Assistance to Sri Lanka, had been off-loaded in Jaffna and placed at the disposal of the local health authorities there. India remains committed to support the public health system of Sri Lanka. The fresh assistance comes even as India and Sri Lanka continue to work together in the health sector and other areas of development under New Delhi’s Neighbourhood First policy.

Earlier this month construction commenced on a new two-storey Accident and Emergency Unit at the District General Hospital in Mannar. This new project has also been funded by India.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and other dignitaries participated in the ground-breaking ceremony held on September 16.

India will also include vital medical equipment in the project which will reinforce emergency health services. The grant amounting to 600 million Sri Lankan rupees that India is funding the project. The High Commission of India in Colombo made this mention.

India has also partnered with Sri Lanka on housing and community development projects. On 4 September, Jha attended the ground-breaking ceremony of “Suhadagama”, the 21st Model Village in Polonnaruwa along with the Speaker of Sri Lankan Parliament, Jagath Wickramaratne, and Deputy Minister of T.B. Sarath.

Indian-assisted Model Village programme covers all 25 districts of Sri Lanka as a part of development cooperation.

Meanwhile, the India-Sri Lanka Foundation has maintained institutional links. Its 41st Board Meeting was held at New Delhi on August 28. During the meeting, progress of work and new projects were discussed in the field of education, culture, science and technology, among others.

Founded in 1998 by the Governments of India and Sri Lanka, the foundation fund grants for projects that build closer economic, scientific, technical, educational and cultural cooperation between the two countries.
