Jammu Kashmir Weather Update: IMD Forecasts Widespread Rain, Thunderstorms; Flash Flood, Landslide Risk

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 30 [VoM News]:The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir during the next two days. Fairly widespread to widespread precipitation is expected across the J&K over tomorrow and the day after.

According to a special bulletin released by the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar at 11:00 am on Sunday, scattered light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are predicted in both the divisions of the UT during the 24 hour period from 8:30 am on Sunday till 8:30 am on Monday, Aug 31.

Weather activity will intensify from Monday to Sep 01 with fair to widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms very likely across the both divisions, the bulletin stated. The seven day weather forecast from Sunday to Sep 05 stated that isolated to fair widespread rainfall activity is very likely in theashmir Valley while it will be fair widespread to widespread on the first three days in the Jammu Division, thereafter, isolated to fair scattered rain is expected in the region.” Scattered light to moderate rain is forecast inashmir on Aug 30 and in Jammu.

Fair widespread rain in Kashmir and widespread in the Jammu region on Aug 31.

Widespread rain in both the regions on September 1″, it said adding that after this. Rain will decrease gradually in the first week of September as well. Fair widespread rain and thunderstorms, lightening will occur in Kashmir and Jammu on Sep 02. Only isolated scattered weather very likely in both the regions on Sep 03.04,05.

The weather office issued warnings of thunderstorms, lightening and gusty wind in some areas.” In Kashmir Valley: isolated thunderstorm, lightening and gusty wind at 30-40 kmph is very likely on Sep 01 & 01. In the Jammu Division : isolated thunderstorm, lightening and gusty winds with speed 30-40 kmph on Aug 30; Isolated heavy rain, thunderstorm, lightening and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are very likely in Jammu from Sep 01 till Sep 02, which may cause landslides, mudslides and flash floods at vulnerable location in hilly areas” read the bulletin.

Meanwhile, temperatures remained above normal across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the last 24 hours.

In Kashmir Valley, the temperatures were 3-5 degrees Celsius higher than normal at many places, and one to two degrees above normal at several places in the Jammu region. The highest maximum temperature recorded was 34.2 degrees Celsius in Kupwara in the Valley, and 35.4 degrees Celsius in Kathua in the Jammu region. The minimum temperatures also continued to be above the seasonal norms by two to five degrees Celsius at most places in Kashmir, and one to four degrees Celsius above normal in Jammu. Gulmarg in Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature of 14.0 degrees Celsius, and Bhaderwah in Jammu logged 18.0 degrees Celsius as the lowest minimum in the region.

The Meteorological Department recorded scattered light to moderate rainfall in the region during the past 24 hours with Kathua AWS registering the highest of 23mm.

The forecast for Monday, August 31 for Srinagar is partly cloudy skies with light rain or thundershowers expected. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 30 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature will hover around 22 degrees Celsius. Jammu is predicted to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers.

The temperatures are expected to reach around 34 degrees Celsius during the day and fall to 28 degrees Celsius at night. Muzaffarabad is also expected to have light to moderate rain or thundershowers with a maximum temperature of approximately 32 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of around 27 degrees Celsius. Mirpur is likely to be partly cloudy with temperatures touching 33 degrees Celsius during the day and settling around 27 degrees Celsius at night.

People in vulnerable areas are advised to take precautions due to the possibility of landslides, mudslides, and flash floods.
