
National Commission for Scheduled Tribes Seeks Report From J&K Admin Over Rape, Death of Minor Gujjar Girl in Kishtwar
Kishtwar, 26 August [VoM News]:- The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) today directed the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP) Kishtwar to furnish a report in the sensitive case relating to sexual assault and death of a Minor Gujjar Scheduled Tribe girl.
The notice has been issued to the authorities vide dated 25 August 2026 based on a complaint filed by Kabir Ahmed, Member Trustee of Tribal Gujjar Bakkerwal Welfare Foundation(TGBWF), Rajouri against one minor Gujjar girl who died a natural death/Sexual Assault as stated in FIR No. 34/2026 registered at Police Station Chatroo of Kishtwar District over the non-invocation of provisions of Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, etc.
According to a press note issued by the Commission, It has decided to conduct an inquiry/ investigation into the matter as per powers conferred under Article 338A of the Constitution of India.
The notice directed the authorities to present the facts and relevant documents pertaining to the allegations at their level, within 5 days from the date of receipt of the notice.
The Commission has also warned that in case of the non-compliance within the time-limit, it would be constrained to exercise the powers of Civil Court conferred on the Commission under Article 338A to issue summons for appearance or to furnish a representation.
The case caught the eyeballs of the commission due to its sensitivity, as a Minor girl belonging to the Gujjar tribal community fell victim to alleged sexual assault leading to her demise, therefore the case requires to furnish required information to NCST under its specific mandate from concerned authorities so that to the probe warranted action may be initiated under the law against culprit.
