ISRO Targets First Gaganyaan Uncrewed Mission Within Four Months, Sets Out Ambitious Space Roadmap
AHMEDABAD, AUG. 23, 2026 [VoM News]: India is on the brink of launching the first uncrewed flight of its Gaganyaan human spaceflight program in the next four months, as confirmed by ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan at the recently concluded Third National Space Day events in Ahmedabad.
According to Narayanan, close to 8,000 tests have been successfully conducted, marking the culmination of the program. With a total of three uncrewed missions planned before the historic crewed flight that will see Indian astronauts venture into space aboard a domestically built spacecraft, the program is in its advanced stages.
During his address, the ISRO chief also shared a comprehensive blueprint for the space agency’s future. In the current financial year alone, a total of twelve satellite missions and eight launch vehicle missions have been envisioned. Furthermore, Narayanan noted the pressing need for 200 to 300 satellites in the next five years to address the increasing demand in areas such as communications, navigation, weather forecasting, Earth observation and security.
Narayanan attributed the upswing in private sector involvement to the space reforms implemented in 2020. Consequently, India now boasts approximately 440 space startups, a stark contrast to the handful of startups present before the reforms took place.
He commemorated India’s recent accomplishments with mentions of missions such as NISAR, Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1. Additionally, he discussed future aspirations like Chandrayaan-4, Chandrayaan-5, a mission to Venus and even a soft landing on Mars. With a clear trajectory set, ISRO also aims to have its own Indian space station by 2035.
Reflecting on India’s progress, Narayanan shared that the nation’s space endeavors have transformed from rudimentary methods using bicycles and bullock carts to ambitious endeavors involving human spaceflights and lunar explorations.
