In a significant development, a total of forty-nine opposition Members of Parliament, including notable figures such as Farooq Abdullah, Supriya Sule, Dimple Yadav, and Shashi Tharoor, found themselves suspended from the Lok Sabha for the duration of the winter session. This decision followed the suspension of 33 MPs the previous day on grounds of “misconduct.”

The drastic action was taken in response to the ongoing disruptions within the House, marked by opposition members raising slogans and displaying placards to underscore their demands. Chief among these demands was a call for Home Minister Amit Shah to provide a statement regarding the security breach in Parliament on December 13.

With the suspension of these 49 Lok Sabha MPs, the total count of opposition parliamentarians facing suspension across both Houses has now reached 141. As of the latest round of suspensions on Wednesday, a total of 92 individuals are now barred from entering the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chambers until the conclusion of the winter session, scheduled to end on December 22.

The motion to suspend these members was put forth by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi justified the suspensions by citing the display of placards by the opposition members, emphasizing that all MPs had collectively agreed not to engage in such actions within the new Parliament building. Joshi accused the opposition of violating rules and showing disrespect to the Chair.

Singling out the Congress and other opposition parties, Joshi claimed that their frustration over the outcomes of recent assembly polls was driving their disruptive behavior. BJP MP Rajendra Agrawal, presiding over the session, requested the government to move the motion for the suspension of the MPs.

In total, 78 MPs—33 from the Lok Sabha and 45 from the Rajya Sabha—now face suspension for the remainder of the winter session, a consequence of the turmoil sparked by their demands.
