2023s AI Smartphone Race: Google and Samsung Lead, OnePlus Focuses on Hardware
In 2023, Google ushered in a wave of AI-enabled features for its Pixel smartphones, and Samsung continued this trend at the beginning of 2024 with the Galaxy S24 series, placing a significant emphasis on AI features reminiscent of Google’s offerings. However, other players in the Android arena are still striving to catch up or are somewhat tardy to the AI-focused developments. Despite the prevalent use of AI in camera image processing for years, brands such as Vivo, Oppo, and OnePlus have yet to fully embrace and promote AI as a fundamental feature enhancing their software and overall smartphone experience.
OnePlus falls into the latter category, as the OnePlus 12, released this year, doesn’t boast any groundbreaking AI features. Instead, the company adheres to the conventional formula, concentrating on enhancing hardware. This approach aligns with my observations from the Pixel 8 Pro review, suggesting that prioritizing hardware improvements is a sensible strategy. Having spent several days with the OnePlus 12, I emerged quite impressed with its performance.
The package includes a 100W charger, a Type-A to Type-C charging cable, and a soft, matte-finished silicon case. The phone’s aesthetics are captivating, especially in the new Flowy Emerald finish provided for this review. The rear panel, adorned with flowing lines and a pleasant texture, adds to the overall appeal. Noteworthy is the camera layout, which exudes elegance, resembling the dial of a traditional timepiece.
